Dear Friend,
Since 1987, Cross of Armenian Unity NGO has aimed to promote an active civic position, courtesy and knowledge, the formation of patriotic, national, and human values, and the improvement of the social conditions of citizens in Ejmiatsin and surrounding villages and in Jambarak frontier region, paying particular attention to vulnerable groups.
CAU has always prioritized the development of education and culture to the younger generation. The Cross of Armenian Unity art school has existed since its founding in 1991 and has provided extracurricular education and and professional skills development in Ejmiatsin and its surrounding communities for more than 5,000 vulnerable children, including the disabled, orphans, and the needy. Many graduates of our school have been greatly successful in various areas using the skills and experiences gained from the center.
Here, in a loving and warm environment, children can be creative and have fun, meanwhile developing skills that will help them to choose their professions and move into their futures. We create conditions conducive to individuality and each child’s unique tastes, vision, and creative development. CAU offers classes in painting, pottery, national cuisine, carpet and rug making, choir and vocal classes, interactive games and activities, master classes, and hosts various cultural events. We respect everyone’s individuality and originality and encourage each child’s self-expression. We believe that we must begin now to promote national and universal values and form an educated and informed society so as to improve our welfare and ensure a bright future for ourselves. We believe that there will come a day when the sun will rise from the same horizon for all Armenians.

| ABOUT THE PROJECT | ||||
Around 65% of children with disabilities are poor or live on 3 USD a day (general poverty line in Armenia is estimated at 97.1 USD per month per person), while 8% live in extreme poverty or less than 2 USD a day (extreme poverty line in Armenia is estimated at 57.2 USD per month perperson), according to the 2012 Social Snapshot and Poverty in Armenia Report published by the National Statistics Service of Armenia. The risk for children with disabilities to be separated from family and placed in an institution such as orphanage or special boarding school is much higher than for other children. One out of every 6 children with disabilities or 16 per cent lives or studies in an orphanage or special boarding school. The prevailing attitudes and discrimination against children with disabilities in the Armenian society is another big challenge that needs to be addressed. UNICEF Report demonstrates that 12 per cent of children with disabilities do not have friends at all and 33% do not participate in any event organized in their communities.
CAU NGO plans to set up a media school in Ejmiatsin, where disabled children and young people aged 14-18 from Ejmiatsin and surrounding communities will have the opportunity to study. The school will be specialized in photography, making short films, audio production and editing, graphic design. Along with media education the beneficiary children will produce informative videos about disability, environment, disasters, children's rights. Media school will record audio books in order to promote social integration and inclusive education of the blind children. The school will enable the children and young people with disabilities to acquire skills in media industry. They will express themselves using school resources, their knowledge and skills.
